When you're planning your wedding ceremony, one of the most personal decisions you'll make is the music. Whether it’s the emotional processional song that plays as you walk down the aisle, or the live set that keeps your guests smiling during the drinks reception, your wedding music sets the tone for the entire day.
That leads many couples to ask: should we hire a pianist or a wedding singer and guitarist?
As a Hertfordshire wedding singer and acoustic guitarist, I’ve performed at countless ceremonies across barns, manor houses, and modern venues alike — and I often speak to couples trying to make this very choice. So here’s a helpful guide to weigh up the options, whether you're early in the planning or narrowing down final details.
A pianist offers a timeless, elegant sound — perfect for formal venues or classical ceremonies. If you love the idea of a grand piano filling the space as your guests arrive or during your ceremony processional, this might be your ideal fit.
Pianists excel at classical and instrumental wedding songs, film scores, or stripped-back versions of modern hits. From Einaudi to Coldplay, the piano delivers a graceful and cinematic atmosphere.
If you're after something more modern, versatile, and emotionally direct, a wedding singer with a guitar might be just what you’re looking for. This setup shines during outdoor ceremonies, relaxed barn weddings, and lively receptions.
As a Hertfordshire-based singer, I create acoustic versions of songs you love — whether it's a heartfelt Ed Sheeran ballad during your ceremony or a singalong moment as the drinks flow.
What sets me apart is live looping — a performance style where I build songs layer by layer, live in the moment. Guitar rhythms, vocal harmonies, and even percussive beats are looped and stacked, creating the rich, full sound of a band — without needing one.
This means you get:
The intimacy of a solo singer
The energy of a band
Complete flexibility for your wedding music — from aisle moments to the last dance
Couples often ask me:
“Can you play our processional song live as I walk down the aisle?”
The answer is yes — and I tailor every setlist to your preferences. From live versions of your ceremony songs to background vibes for the drinks reception, I match the energy of each moment with thoughtful acoustic music.
Choosing between a pianist and a singer-guitarist depends on your wedding style. For classical sophistication, a pianist may be perfect. But if you're looking for:
A more upbeat, relaxed vibe
A mix of classic and modern wedding songs
A singer who can provide music throughout your entire day
A one-person band setup with the wow factor...
Then a live looping wedding singer from Hertfordshire (that’s me!) might just be your perfect match.
From rustic barns in Hertfordshire to elegant manor houses in Kent, Essex, and Northamptonshire, I’ve had the joy of performing at beautiful wedding venues across the southeast. If you’re getting married at one of these locations, there’s a good chance I already know the layout and how to get the best from the space.

Planning your wedding music should be just as exciting as planning the rest of your day! To help make things easier, I’ve put together a list of frequently asked questions about my services. If you don’t find what you’re looking for, feel free to reach out – I’m always happy to chat.
What makes your performances different from other wedding musicians?
I perform using live looping, meaning I layer guitar, percussion, vocals, and harmonies in real-time – creating the sound of a full band, live. It’s exciting to watch, always unique, and gives your wedding music a rich, dynamic feel without overwhelming the moment.
Can we request specific songs for the setlist?
Absolutely! I typically learn 2–3 special songs for each couple, especially for important moments like the ceremony or first dance. I also ask if there are any songs you don’t want played, to ensure everything fits perfectly. I use my experience to shape the rest of the setlist, adjusting it throughout the day to keep the vibe just right for your guests.
Do you take requests during the event?
I don’t take song requests during the event. I’ve honed my craft over years of performing, and I know what works best to create the right atmosphere for each part of the day. I’ll tailor the setlist beforehand, and make sure it flows perfectly. However, for key moments like first dances or father-daughter dances, I’m happy to play your personal song choice.
How long will it take to set up?
Setup typically takes about 30 to 60 minutes, but I like to arrive 90 minutes early to make sure everything is perfect. This gives me time to set up the sound, check levels, and ensure everything’s running smoothly without rushing, so you can enjoy a stress-free day.
How long are your sets?
My standard performance includes 2 x 45-minute sets, with a 15-minute break in between. However, I’m happy to play for up to 90 minutes straight if preferred – whichever works best for your timeline.
Do you play music between your sets?
Yes – I provide a curated playlist to keep the atmosphere going while I take a short break. If you have a specific playlist you love, I’m happy to use that too.
What if my wedding venue has sound restrictions?
I use a Bose portable speaker for my performances, which allows me to adjust the volume as needed. This is one of the advantages of my setup, as I can work within the venue’s sound limits and still deliver great sound. I’m always happy to work with your venue to ensure everything meets their guidelines.
Do you use strobe lighting?
I keep lighting to a minimum, as I believe minimal lighting works better for the style of music I play. Unlike a DJ setup, I prefer to focus on the music itself, creating a more intimate and relaxed atmosphere that suits the vibe of your day.
How far do you travel?
I’m based in Hertfordshire and regularly perform across the surrounding counties and beyond. I’m happy to travel nationwide as long as travel expenses are covered, with additional costs applying for bookings over 100 miles from Hertfordshire.
Can we see you play or watch a video before we book you?
Yes, absolutely! I regularly perform at public events across the Home Counties (listed on my event page). You can also watch videos of my live performances on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@tomwackettmusic or get a behind-the-scenes look on my Instagram www.instagram.com/tomwackettmusic.
